Six Nations: Wright backs Lamont over verbal volley

Former Scotland rugby star Peter Wright today defended Sean Lamont labelling his own team's performance "abysmal" in Saturday's 24-6 defeat by Wales at Murrayfield.

"It's very much borne out of frustration," said Wright before refusing to press the panic button and suggesting an immediate bounceback against Ireland, also in Edinburgh, in a fortnight, could happen.

"I don't have an issue with a player saying that. It sometimes takes that," said Wright of Lamont's straight talking.

Added the man who has declared an interest in becoming next permanent coach of SRU-run Edinburgh Rugby: "It's a little bit of a blow. It's about form. It's not about quality. If they can eradicate mistakes, cut out errors, Scotland will bounce back."

But Wright said that Ireland, too, would have points to prove next up after losing to 25-22 France yesterday and warned: "They won the try count and if they sort their discipline out - they gave away a lot of penalties - it's going to be exceptionally hard."
