Steph Twell takes English cross country title home

ATHLETICS: Steph Twell (Aldershot), who has switched her allegiance to Scotland but has still to declare her availability for Commonwealth Games selection for Delhi in October, won the English senior women's cross country title at Leeds on Saturday.

The World junior 1500 metres champion covered the eight kilometres course in 27:52 to defeat Stevie Stockton (Vale) by 15 seconds with Hatti Dean (Hallamshire) third in 28:12. Another Anglo Scot, Tom Russell (Stroud), was sixth in the men's 12k race in 39:13, over a minute down on winner Andy Vernon.

Scottish and South African champion Freya Murray (Edinburgh AC) continued her fine cross country form when she finished second in the Fukuoka International in Japan on Saturday.

Murray was outsprinted by Kazue Kojima by just one second with another Japanese, Hitomi Niiya third, seven seconds behind. Kojima covered the 6k course in 19:32.
