Tennis: Watson and Baltacha falter

Andy MURRAY was once again left as the only British player in a grand slam after Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha suffered second-round defeats at the French Open yesterday.

British No.1 Baltacha was first out on court and things looked very promising when she took the first set against Vania King but the American fought back to secure a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The Scot said: "It was very tough. I knew going into the match that it was going to be very difficult. She's got a good game on clay and she's playing very well."

Watson's task always looked daunting against 16th seed Kaia Kanepi and the extra power of the Estonian proved the difference in a 6-1 6-3 defeat for the teenager.

Kim Clijsters was the main women's casualty, going down in three sets to Arantxa Rus.
