Game review: Devil May Cry HD Collection

Revisiting the Devil May Cry collection reveals that few contenders have matched the hack ’n’ slash finesse of the series which started in 2001. The first and third games remain masterpieces, with only the second one letting this collection down.

Each game sees demon hunter Dante squaring off against hordes of monsters using a combination of melee and firearm attacks while racking up stylish combos. All three games offer expansive combo options that can be bought by spending red orbs dropped by enemies. More varied combos will earn Dante more orbs, meaning you are always pressured to keep attacks hard-hitting and mixed to progress.

This deep combat really shines through, especially during Devil May Cry 3, which gives you the power to switch between fighting styles mid combo to really shake things up. It’s a testament to how well designed and precise the combat mechanic is. Each game is also brutally difficult, offering a real challenge during a time of complacency in the games industry.

While the collection is fun, the visuals haven’t aged well, and miss the same lavish treatment afforded to other HD collections. Yet all three games ooze style, superb design and substance. Most importantly, the Devil May Cry games have always strived to make you feel powerful while you play, and that great feeling hasn’t rubbed off in the wash, proving that these games remain timeless.
